It appears that Asus have taken note of users complaining about their all over gloss finished netbooks which act as fingerprint magnets. They have just released a new version of the popular Asus Eee PC 1005PE, which has a new non gloss finish, know as the Asus 1005PE-PU27-BK.
The Asus 1005PE is a great netbook, no doubt about that, you can read my review here. But the all over gloss is an annoyance for a lot of users, so it’s great to see this new Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU27 model available.
It is identical do the standard 1005PE-PU17 but now has a new non gloss lid with a soft touch, which is nicely fingerprint, and light scratch resistant.
As a reminder of the specifications, it has a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 pixel display (still glossy), the Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, Windows 7 Starter, and a 6-cell battery quoted at a massive 14 hours. Via Liliputing
Update: The Amazon 1005PE-PU27 is now available from Amazon for $389.99 $365!
Also, it has a plain matte lid (“Black Soft Touch Finish”), and not a textured pattern as first expected. This finish is totally fingerprint resistant and should also be harder to scratch.

Hey, i was wondering if i should pick up this updated 1005PE or wait for the 1005PR?

That very much depends on whether you want the HD display or not.
The HD display in the 1005PR will give you more desktop space as such.

HD would be nice but not if the price is significantly greater. Do you have any idea of when the 1005PR will drop and what the price difference may be between 1005PR and the 1005PE?

Nothing official has been announced, but at a guess I would say a couple of months or so, but it can vary.
Price wise is hard to say, you can expect to pay a premium. Maybe somewhere between $40-$100.

I am looking for a 1005PE with matt display and this textured cover. But I can’t seem to find such a thing.
Any idea?
The asus website is not helpful, but very confusing.

I haven’t seen it available in the US / UK either.
It turns out the Asus 1005PE-PU27 doesn’t have a textured lid, but does have a matte finish, I have updated the photo.
