The Asus 1201PN looks very similar to the popular HD capable Asus Eee PC 1201N, but has been updated with the latest processor and “Next Generation Ion” (aka Ion 2) graphics card.
The Asus Eee PC 1201PN adds the letter “P” to it’s name, to symbolize the use of the new Intel Atom N450 1.66Ghz Pine Trail processor.
Update: The Asus 1201PN is now available and shipping! You can order from Amazon for just $484!
The Atom 330 has been swapped out for the new more energy efficient N450, along with the new Ion graphics.
The major disadvantage with the previous 1201N netbook was it’s battery life, as it couldn’t compete with the other netbooks on the market, because of it’s high power drain HD graphics.
The Nvidia Ion 2 graphics as featured in this netbook aim to solve this problem, as well as being faster, it features Nvidia Optimus technology which automatically switches to the dedicated Ion graphics when needed, and back to the standard Intel graphics when not. This give the best battery life and performance in one netbook!
The Asus 1201PN has a 12.1 1366 x 768 pixel (720p HD) display, with 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and HDMI output for connecting to HDTV.
It features a 6-cell 63Whr battery, no battery life times have been provided, but we are hopeful of the new Ion 2 + Optimus technology. We’re sure it will vary a lot whether used just surfing or playing HD videos / gaming.
Asus Eee PC 1201PN Performance
The Asus 1201PN can easily playback 1080p HD videos and output them to an HDTV. 3DMark06 on the pre-sample returned a score of 2013. This is higher than the previous Ion 1201N model which scored 1583.
Update: In a strange turn of events the initial release of the Asus Eee PC 1201PN will not feature Optimus technology. It will feature Ion 2 graphics, but will not have the power saving graphics switching technology, resulting in the Ion 2 graphics being active all of the time.
This is because Asus want to be to first to market an Ion 2 netbook. A version with Optimus will be available later in the year. You might also want to consider the Asus 1215N wihch has just been announced.
Buy the Asus Eee PC 1201PN now from Amazon for $484!

Still no clues as to how much this will cost, or when it’s gonna be launched?
I’ve had 4 Asus EEE netbooks in the past, all are great, and I’ve had my eye on this for a while since they previewed it at CeBit. I’m desperate to buy one!
I was contemplating the 1201n but I’d prefer a longer battery – and this is the baby, but it’s not out yet

I don’t know for sure, but I can only assume it will be in the next month or two, hopefully.
It will probably be priced around the same as when the 1201N was new.
