The Nvidia Ion graphics shook up the netbook industry last year bringing 1080HD playback and gaming to a number of netbooks. Ever since then there has been a lot of talk and speculation about the Ion’s successor, the Nvidia Ion 2.
More recently there has been much talk about switching graphics. This is where the netbook or notebook features two graphics cards, a standard low powered one, and a faster more powerful, but also more power hungry one. As there are two graphics cards, the user can switch between both cards, and use the low power one for every day use, maximizing the battery life, and switching to the other card for gaming etc.
It has now been announced that the upcoming Ion 2 will feature the newly announced Nvidia Optimus technology. The Optimus enables automatic switching between the two cards, automatically selecting the best card, leading to seamless transitions between the two. This offers the combination of long battery life when doing day to day tasks, but also high performance when gaming or watching HD videos.
