Microsoft, along with every other company out there are now free to use the term “Netbook” after winning the right back from Psion.

Psion claimed that they had copyright of the term for one of it’s old products. But even after the tern netbook can be freely used, Microsoft want to change it to something else.

Clearly not happy with the many other terms such as netbook, smartbook, ultra-portable, thin-and-light and MID, Microsoft want to introduce a new term; Low cost small notebook PCs.

It doesn’t exactly roll well off of the tongue. I can’t exactly picture two friends saying “Hey, I just bought a new low cost small notebook PC”.

The new term is meant to show the fact that netbooks now do much more than just Internet browsing.

As the phrase netbook came around from both users and netbook manufacturers, we think, and hope it sticks around!
