Netbooks generally do not feature an optical drive of any sort. Which can be a problem if you need to access some optical media.
An external USB DVD drive would be an obvious solution, which I have written about in the past, with a number of recommendations.
With the announcement of the ultraslim and ultra small Pioneer DVR-XD09 DVD writer, I will need to add it to my list of recommended drives. The Pioneer DVR-XD09 weights just 8 ounces, and measures just 5.24 x 0.58 x 5.24-inches, which is only just slightly bigger than an average CD case.
Pioneer claim that the DVR-XD09 is the most compact drive design ever.

This very small and light design makes the Pioneer DVRXD09 the ideal optical drive to carry with you. If you have room in your netbook case for a CD case, you will now have room for a DVD burner!
The Pioneer DVR-XD09 is self powered from the USB 2.0 connection, and can write DVDs at 8x on a single layer disc, and 6x speed on a doulbe layer DVD.
The tiny drive also has a reasonable price of justy $79.99, and should be available in August.
