It looks like Toshiba are going to grab an extra slice of the netbook market with the new Toshiba NB255.
Previously most of Toshiba’s netbooks have been priced higher than the average netbook, which have been pushing them out of the market, even though their netbooks have always been very good.
But with the newly announced Toshiba NB255 that could change. The NB255 is a black only version of the NB305, with the latest DDR3 supporting Intel Atom N455 1.66GHz processor, which comes at a cheaper price of just $299.
This sub $300 price should make it a popular seller as it retains its high quality keyboard, battery life and overall build quality. Unlike the NB305 the Toshiba NB255 will be restricted to only black as a color option.
Other features include a 101.-inch LCD with a 1024×600 resolution, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6-cell battery rated for 8 hours of run time.
If you are looking for a well priced, high quality and modern netbook and aren’t too fussed about color options, the Toshiba NB205 should be an ideal fit.
Update: You can now buy the Toshiba NB255 from Amazon for just $299.99!

You say the Toshiba NB255 is a black only version and then mention that Amazon is selling it in 5 colours. I’m confused!

The way Amazon lists it is confusing.
The black model is $299 (NB255), while the other colors are $379, but these are the NB305.

I just bought one last week to use for paper writing on the go and really love the thing, Its sleek, light and the touchpad isnt overly obnoxious, its compact enough to make typing about the same as a keyboard after a short time of practice (still not used to such shallow keypresses on laptops and netbooks.)

I had an NB205 which was “liberated” from my possession. I have the NB255 now. I liked the NB205 better. More solid build quality, and more battery life. I have the NB255 set-up exactly as the previous machine. Both have/had 6 cell batteries but the NB255 lasts about a third to half the time of the NB205. I installed a 2Gb SODIM RAM. The NB255 did not come with a 250Gb HDD but the usual 160Gb drive. Both also were set-up partitioned with windows and linux. The NB205 was the last of the XP machines, the NB255 came with windows7 starter. I like the NB255, but miss the NB205.

I bought a NB255-250 from Best Buy and except for removing some of the bloatware. I really think its a nice travel netbook. I can’t say the speed is much improved with the Atom 455 over a 270 or 280. You would think the DDR3 memory would help?
